A 4WD escapade through a beautiful and diverse rainbow nation, we visit many magical nature reserves, 3 kingdoms, 3 countries and 2 oceans. We traverse the small kingdom of Lesotho with a rich cultural heritage. We travel across the Kingdom of Zulu people from the Drakensburg to the warm Indian Ocean, then northwards into the colorful Oceans of Mozambique. In the Kruger National Park we game drive looking for the Big 5. We end this trip in the beautiful mother city of Cape Town and its unique peninsular. This is truly a trip of a life time!
DAY 1, 21 Sept, JOHANNESBURG (Lodge - - -)
After arriving in ‘Egoli, city of gold’ we meet and greet and then transfer to our accommodation and check in. We have the afternoon to do a Soweto half day cultural trip in a minivan driven by our guide. In the evening we will go out for dinner at a local restaurant (own expense).
DAY 2, 22 Sept, GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARK, BASOTHO VILLAGE (Huts, BLD)
Rising up to 3,482 meters, referred to as ‘barrier of spears’, Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa. The mountains are home to some spectacular fauna and flora including forest, scrub and fynbos and the bird life make up 37% of all non-marine bird species in Southern Africa. Caves are easily found and many have rock paintings of the Bushmen which date back to 40,000 years ago. It is there where the Basotho Cultural Village Rest Camp nestles on the eastern side of the amalgamated Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The camp resembles an 18th century Basotho Village. The surroundings take you back from the pathway of previous times to the modern days, here the Basotho lifestyle, architectural and hospitality is the order of the day. With some luck will have a chance to see the rare Bearded Vulture.
DAY 3-4, 23-24 Sept, LESOTHO, MALEALEA (Huts 2xB 2xL 2xD)
Today is a long drive day through spectacular scenery, challenging at times, stopping for everlasting impressions. The Basotho people strategically use this mountainous Kingdom to defend themselves against enemies. We enter through the “Gates of paradise” to our lodge which is situated in the heart of this rugged mountain region and gives us an excellent opportunity to experience Lesotho’s culture. There are 4WD treks in the area which are worth while exploring. Village walks and pony treks are optional (own expense). In the evenings local entertainment will be provided.
DAY 5, 25 Sept, SANIVALLEY ( Chalet, BLD)
Sani Valley Lodge is situated in the World Heritage site of the uKhahlamba Drakensburg, at the foot of the well-known Sani Pass. Situated on a 260 acre lake, well stocked game reserve and trout fishing lake provide a chance to relax and absorb the panoramic mountain views. One can enjoy a massage, go fly fishing, game viewing on horse back or be active on the lake. The adventure of the Sani Pass, hiking to the Bushmen paintings and exploring the beautiful Underberg / Himeville area makes opportunities for all.
DAY 6, 26 Sept, DURBAN (Apartment, B--)
We drive east to the coast towards Durban to meet the Indian Ocean stopping for breathtaking views. For the next night we are based in Umthlanga rocks. Ushakaland, the Soccer Stadium and Durban Habour are some of the sites we will visit. Here we will get the feeling for the Sharks (local Rugby team)!
DAY 7, 27 Sept, ST. LUCIA (Camping, BLD)
This is an awesome opportunity to spot wildlife like the famous Rhino and Hippo along the Estuary and Ocean Reserve on a boat cruise and self-game drive. We will take a walk along the beach to see the colorful and interesting rock pools, that trap many of little sea creatures.
DAY 8, 28 Sept, KOSI BAY (Camping, BLD)
Our accommodation is set between the trees of these spectacular dune forests where we can kick off our shoes and walk around in the white sand. Kosi Bay Nature Reserve covers a region of fertile estuary, mangroves, dune forest and lakes which we explore. We visit Bunga Neck and the Kosi Bay river mouth to watch the local fisherman in the estuary, with their traditional fish kraals. We enter with our 4WD, visit some the lakes edge and enjoy a picnic in the park. We could also charter a boat for sunset on the lakes.(own expense)
DAY 9-10, 29-30 Sept, PONTA DO OURO (Camping, 2B,2L,1D)
The quaint little town of Ponta do Ouro is situated in Southern Mozambique just 10 km from the South African border. The hustle & bustle of development, such as houses being restored to their former glory coupled with a good dose of laid back charm are what make this such an unforgettable destination.
In Ponta do Ouro you will be sure to find beautiful white beaches, dense dune forests, amazing diving and an ever-stretching azure sea. A very traditional open air market, several "cantinas" (little shops) and eager curio sellers will quench your thirst for shopping.
DAY 11, 1 Oct, BILENE (Camping, BLD)
Bilene, also known as Praia do Bilene, is a town in southern Mozambique, northeast of Maputo. It is known as a beach resort, lying on the Mozambique Channel. Noted for its calm and clear lagoon, the Uembje Lagoon is giving way to the pounding Indian Ocean beyond tall dunes. It is also where the president has his holiday home!
DAY 12-14, 2 Oct – 4 Oct, INHAMBANE (Bungalow, BLD)
Today is a long drive day through coastal towns and markets with intermitted stops. Our accommodation is breathtaking with comfortable and clean rooms set just meters away from the bountiful ocean. Local fishermen pass our bungalows with the daily catch.
Set amongst many coconut trees, Tofu has a local market with many colourful paintings and curios in this vibrant village. This is a great place to meet the friendly locals and catch up on daily news. Dhow rides, snorkeling, scuba diving (own expense) and swimming in the warm ocean are some of the activities that are available.
DAY 15, 5 Oct, SUNSET BEACH (camping, BLD)
It is an ideal opportunity for you to experience the powerful ocean and have a sundowner on the huge deck. We use this as a stopover on our way to the Kruger.
DAY 16-17, 6 & 7 Oct, KRUGER NATIONAL PARK (Camping, BLD)
This is one of the most famous wildlife parks in the world. It has the greatest variety of animals of any park in Africa, including the Big Five as well as cheetah, giraffe, hippo and many species of antelope and small game. The parks’ censes includes 147 mammals, 507 birds, 114 reptiles and 336 different trees. The camp sites are excellent and infrastructure is well kept with hot showers and brilliant landscape. Feel the thrill of driving yourself through this unique African bushveld. Early morning starts ensure the best results for spotting lions, giraffe and the mighty elephant.
DAY 18, 8 Oct, DULLSTROM (Chalet, BLD)
Here we enjoy the cool mountain air and surroundings are famous for trout fishing and horse riding(own expense).There are many facilities like a spa and heated pool and minigolf we will enjoy very comfortable accommodation in this quaint town.
DAY 19, 9 Oct, CAPE TOWN (Guesthouse 3xB - -)
After we transfer to the airport and our 4X4 we catch a flight to t have 3 days to explore the many attractions that Cape Town and its Peninsular has to offer. We visit the hustle and bustle of the city, Cape Point, Hout Bay, the penguins in Simons Town and some of the Cape’s famous beaches. We will enjoy scenic drives with a visit to the V&A Waterfront and an unforgettable visit to Table Mountain. We indulge in the local fare at a variety of amazing restaurants (own expense).
DAY 20, 10 Oct, TOUR ENDS (- - -)
Spend the morning catching up on last minute curio shopping or absorbing the cape sunshine. Feeling rested and rejuvenated ready to return to society. Transfer in a minivan to airport to catch flights home.
